This book is unlike anything ever written about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Presented historically and side-by-side, two professors – an Israeli Jew and a Palestinian Muslim – deliver the narratives of both sides revealing different perspectives about the simmering conflict in a region desperately needing peaceful resolution.
Colleagues who teach this eternal struggle to students in their classrooms, the authors have established a close friendship without denying their opposing viewpoints, and convictions. Where governments repeatedly fail, their mutual respect succeeds.
Readers will be fascinated by the unique delivery of this complex subject matter through the authors’ historical review coupled by their personal stories. History will come alive through these two men whose lives have been directly affected by this on-going Middle East conflict.
Whether a novice, desiring the ABC’s of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, or a seasoned student of history, this book promises deeper understanding of the controversy and why a peace agreement remains elusive.

One Land Two Stories edition by Shaul M Gabbay Amin M Kazak Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
Dr. Shaul Gabbay (a Jewish Israeli) and Dr. Amin Kazak (a Palestinian) present a fresh, impartial, and inclusive look at the Israeli - Palestinian conflict in "One Land Two Stories."
For those readers who are already well versed in the contentious issues and history of the area, they will find an unbiased examination of the conflict which is a rarity for for this heated subject. Gabbay and Kazak respectfully and compassionately explain their opposing experiences and views side by side throughout each chapter of the book. As a political science undergraduate student, "One Land Two Stories" was the textbook in one of my several Middle Eastern studies classes. This book was the only time I experienced Israeli - Palestinian conflict information without an agenda from one side of the debate or the other. As a result, I came away with a better understanding of the situation and a more open mind. I am sure the experience will be the same for many others aspiring to learn as much as they can about Israel, Palestine, and the possibility of peace.
For those readers new to the subject, they will get a comprehensive and accessible overview of the Israeli - Palestinian conflict from the historical, religious, and cultural ties of each group (Israeli and Palestinian) to the area, to the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, to the contemporary issues affecting the peace process and the possible one and two-state solutions to end the conflict.
I read this very well written and exceptionally researched book with some hesitancy, having read scores of books on the topic. What could another rendition of the same material teach me? It turns out, more than I could have imagined. This book stands head and shoulders above others of its genre for two primary reasons the first is that both Israeli and Palestinian perspectives of the story are told side-by-side, so that no matter from which tightly-held perspective the reader may come at it, they can make it through the perspective they disagree with, or even abhor, because soon enough the author they agree with will address the same topic. The result? Even hard-headed, no room-for-debate readers may soften as they read and `hear' the other perspective in depth, probably for the first time. And that perspective may come as quite a shock. Let's face it; most people are firmly set in their opinions about this conflict -- that's why this book comes as a much needed breath of fresh air.
The human element is the second main reason readers will enjoy this book so much. Amidst all the facts, figures, maps, and historical factoids emerge two human beings who have lived the story from birth. The generous inclusion of personal and historical photos throughout the book make every page interesting - you get the facts and you get the human stories behind them. One author is a Palestinian refugee who unwillingly left his home in Haifa at the age of fourteen, and the other is Israeli born and raised who served as an officer in the Israeli Defense Force. The fact that these two author/professors--who seem to disagree 100% on the history of the conflict and even potential solutions--were able to sit together and write it makes the read all the more riveting.
In addition to those in the West, I wish all Israelis and Palestinians would use this text in their classrooms, and that leaders involved in the resolution of the conflict would as well. What they might find is that in order to find a solution they will finally have to stop arguing only for their side, and learn to truly hear and then accommodate the viewpoints of everyone affected by this seemingly endless conflict. The authors are showing the way by example; the rest of us would be wise to follow.
I'll keep my review short and sweet. The book was really hard to put down. As someone who has a very strong belief system of their own it was refreshing to see men who could communicate their opinions and beliefs in a professional and controlled way, such as putting together this masterpiece of their individual ideals. When in Denver I had the pleasure of sitting in on both professors lectures, and was glad to get some one on one quality time towards my education that this book surely delivered! I highly recommend this reading to anyone who is studying conflict resolution and international politics, especially in the Middle East. Although there may never be a resolution to Israels struggle, knowledge is always a good weapon.
I bought this book at my local synagogue after hearing the two authors speak together. "One land, Two Stories" is by an Israeli Jew and a Palestinian refugee, who now teach a class together at the University of Colorado Boulder. It was fascinating to read the Jew's story as his family immigrated from Baghdad because of persecution. But I knew most of his side of the story. The Palestinian opened a new world for me as I saw what "Al Naqba" (the disaster--the creation of the State of Israel) had meant to him personally.
At the end, the Jew argued for the "Two State Solution," ignoring the reality that Israel has been a two-state disaster since its inception. I liked the Arab's One State solution better because the Jew had described his enjoyment of shopping in Gaza and other Arab areas. The bit of one-stateness that Israel has had is where its most peaceful times have come.
Also, Temple Mount, the Old City and the Cave of Machpelah (where Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Rebecca, Sarah and Leah are buried) are 3 places that are so profoundly sacred to Muslims, Jews and Christians that Justice cannot be obtained by assigning these areas to any one group. Only a one-state solution can truly give everyone their unalienable rights in these places.
I recommend this book. Few have ever understood both sides as clearly presented here. The collaboration of the authors is proof that peace CAN be attained in the Mideast, as is much cooperation between Jews and Arabs within Israel.
A good book for a reader who is new to the subject. The structure of the book is appealing short chapters with a brief overview followed by each author's interpretation. Excellent chronology and glossary.
